The state of North Carolina is filled with natural beauty throughout the year. I feel that fall in NC the most beautiful time in the most beautiful place in this region. Nothing makes me happier than getting out among the leaves early on a Saturday morning to photograph the dew before it evaporates.

Norm the Niner

A statue as noble as the Norm the Niner statue at UNC Charlotte deserves HDR treatment. The level of craftsmanship on this campus landmark is breathtaking when studied up-close.

Obama Rally at Charlotte

After unloading my cameria this was favorite picture from the Obama rally on Monday. It was amazing hearing our new president the night before he got elected. Glad he could come by UNC Charlotte!

UNC Charlotte’s Charlotte Research Institute

This is the first of many HDR shots I’ll be taking of UNC Charlotte and the city of Charlotte in general. I was out here one morning before the doors opened so that I could turn in my physics homework. The gorgeous morning lighting compelled me to take a few shots.

Dusk over Charlotte

When Jane, Jessica, Tim and I were looking for somewhere to eat, I couldn’t resist taking this shot of center city Charlotte with sun setting in the background. My favorite part about the image, besides the colors, is the construction on the street; indicative of the city. There is construction everywhere! I’m ready to move away for a few years so that I can come back when a lot of this infrastructure is finally up and running.

A wall in Purgstall

In the little Austria villa of Purgstall, there is a shaded path that leads down a trail along the river. This wall looked so old and appeard to have so much character that I had to photograph it.

Faerie Circle

As I walked towards Santeetlah Creek I noticed a beaver in the water. All the guys with me wanted to try to follow it downstream towards its dam… until we noticed all of these butterflies on the ground dancing in a circle.

It was one of those moments that simply takes your breath away. It is magical to see a butterfly as it lands, it moves almost like a fairy or a pixie. Far more esoteric than just a regular bug. Yet to see a group of these fair beings standing together in a circle was much more than just special.

Sadly as I looked through the treeline, I could see the damage being done by the loggers returning to the area, after a hundred year hiatus. Thanks to the current US president, these protected areas were now eligible for logging again. I could almost imagine these butterflies meeting together to talk about how to get their land back, their habitat, their life.

A River Runs Through

This flowing water really resonated with me as I walked through Joyce Kilmer Virgin Forest near Lake Santeetlah, NC.

The forest is full of old trees, untouched by the vast logging efforts which devastated the region in the late 1800s. Underneath the canopy though lies beautiful flowing water like this.
